Position size calculator

A quantity from your own capital, risk per trade, entry and stop-loss. For learning, not a recommendation.

About this calculator

Enter your own capital, the share of it you accept losing on one trade, and the trade’s entry and stop-loss. The calculator works out the quantity at which a hit stop-loss loses about that amount.

A calculator for learning, not a recommendation. It knows only the figures you type, works in your browser, and says nothing about whether a trade suits you. Once you enter your own capital and risk per trade, they are remembered on this device only and never sent to us; Clear empties the form and forgets them.

Your figures

Illustration only: the figures filled in are made up, from the shares example in the position sizing lesson. Not a recommendation. Replace them with your own.

  • The quantity is rounded down, so the amount at risk is at most the budget.
  • A gap beyond the stop-loss, slippage and trading costs can make a loss larger than shown.
  • Several open trades add up: keep a limit on your total open risk as well.

How it is worked out

  1. Risk budget = capital × risk per trade.
  2. Risk per share or unit = entry − stop-loss for a buy (stop-loss − entry for a sell).
  3. Without a lot size: quantity = risk budget ÷ risk per unit, rounded down.
  4. With a lot size: risk per lot = risk per unit × lot size, and lots = risk budget ÷ risk per lot, rounded down.
  5. Position value = quantity × entry. Compare it with the money and margin in your account.

Lot sizes and contract specifications are set by the exchanges and change from time to time. Check the current ones on the exchange’s website before you use them here.
